About Me, Lovesong.Blog, and You

I hate talking about myself.

That’s something I’ve been working on in therapy, as I discuss in my therapy blog posts.

Where to begin…

I’m Ross, a regular dude in my late 30s.

Me at Zion National Park

Last year I sifted through 25 years’ worth of trauma and damage in isolation as I wrote my debut book, Love Songs and Suicide: A Travel Memoir, Romance, and Tragic Musical Comedy.

In that book I chronicle my once-in-a-lifetime stint as a security guard at a rural hospital and travels across the United States. I also discuss my mother’s death and reflect on love, loss, depression, anxiety, and grief. The book is often hilarious despite its heavy title.

But enough about me.

The site is meant to be about you, primarily.

A Self-Improvement Blog for Screwed Up People

Can I say screwed up? I guess I just did.

And you don’t necessarily have to be screwed up in order to benefit from the information I’ll be presenting here.

But, if you’re anything like me, you struggle to relate to the self-improvement experts who seem to have all the answers.

You know who I’m talking about—those unbearably energetic gurus and influencers who run five miles before sunrise every morning, effortlessly network with high-profile people, spend their days developing their “personal brand,” whatever that means, and then deliver keynote addresses on weekends.

Isn’t the term “personal brand” nauseating? I digress. . . .

And then there are the “lazy” entrepreneurs like Tim Ferriss. I mean, I’m a fan in Tim’s case, but the lazy gurus frustrate me even more.

As usual, I’m sitting here in my bedroom and toiling away at my keyboard like a chain-smoking monkey trying to write the next great American novel.

And meanwhile, Tim and his buddies are off in some tropical paradise building empires while sipping Mai Tais on the beach.

But life isn’t a personal branding, Mai-Tai sipping, or empire-building contest (good thing, too).

And over the last year, I’ve made progress in my pursuit of a happier and more prosperous life.

In 2023 I sought therapy after a breakdown, and with help from my therapist, I’ve developed better strategies for managing my intense emotions and depression.

And, of course, my book was the single greatest accomplishment of my life—and whether that achievement is recognized by a broad audience is largely irrelevant to me.

Harmonize Your Life

At Lovesong.blog, I’m just trying to improve myself, one post at a time, and I’d love for you to accompany me on this adventure. Hopefully we both can challenge ourselves to step out of our comfort zones and embrace new opportunities for learning and growth.

Some topics I discuss here include:

I’m also a writer at heart, as well as a musician. Accordingly, this blog also features personal stories and music.

Closing Thoughts

Self-improvement can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. By sharing my own experiences and strategies, I hope to make the journey a little easier for all of you. Feel free to leave a comment or send me an email if you have any questions.
